Island Rhythm is an arts and cultural exchange program coordinated by Kulchajam in partnership with the Island Vibe Festival.

In its second year in 2010, it brings together arts and cultural practitioners from across Australia and the Pacific with the traditional owners, the Nunukhl, Goenpul and Nuggi (Quandamooka) peoples, and the community of Minjerribah- (North Stradbroke Island) for a diverse program of skillsharing, knowledge exchange, professional development, collaboration and performance opportunities.

The program culminates in a diverse series of workshops, performances, speakesr, forums, films and artistic collaborations at the Island Vibe Festival to over 4000 people. Highlights including a collaborative performance at the closing ceremony of the festival incorporating local youth and school students amongst the traditional cultures represented during the program and an all star contemporary musical performance.

PARTNERS AND ARTISTS INVOLVED:
The program has evolved as a partnership between Kulchajam Inc as the project manager and Island Vibe Festival as the principal partner and organizations and elders from the Minjerribah (Nth Stradbroke Is) community. Key arts and cultural organizations on Minjerribah partnered in the program including the Yulliburribah Dance Group, the Quandamooka Saltwater Murri Aboriginal Artist Cooperative, and The North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, as well as the Dunwich Public (Primary and Secondary) School

The Quandamooka Peoples of Minjerribah maintain rich Indigenous cultures and now share country with white Australian, Rotuman, Maori, Kanak, Filipino, Samoan, Tongan as well as maintaining historical links with other Indigenous communities across Australia including communities on Palm Island, in Willouhra, Grooyte and Tiwi Islands. Like many other Indigenous and culturally diverse communities the island faces challenges of drugs and alcohol, unemployment, available housing, and a lack of opportunities for the youth.

The project responds to a call from elders on Minjerribah to support revitalisation and pride in culture as an anecdote to the disadvantage and difficulties facing the youth on the island. Realising that such a call is shared by many across the country, the program reaches out to emerging artists and cultural workers in Indigenous communities to take part in a diverse program of cultural and artistic exchange that can support mutual learnings.

Building upon the existing family, clan and cultural links the program draws together modern and traditional musicians, dancers, weavers and other artist and cultural workers for a week of artistic and cultural exchange that provides positive representation of a variety of traditional and contemporary Indigenous Australian and Pacific cultures.

Pacific Islander will be the first to loose their homes to climate change.
Many Pacific islanders live on the coastal fringes of the islands and atolls, and rising sea levels pose a significant threat to their livelihoods, cultures and communities. Many villages and urban centres report the increasing occurrence of very high tides, erosion of beaches and contamination of coastal freshwater by salt. In some areas, villagers have already been forced to relocate to higher ground following regular tidal invasions.

The Carteret Islands
People from these islands will not be the first people to lose their homes because of global warming. Rising seas, expanding deserts and changing weather have already displaced many, possibly millions of people. They started to leave their islands in early 2007.

Uranium/Nuclear Industry
In Australia Aboriginal people have suffered most from the impacts of the uranium mining and the nuclear industry generally.

You got to know your history….
Maralinga , in the remote western areas of South Australia is the home of the Maralinga Tjarutja- traditional owners and was the site of seven atomic bombs in the 1950s. Many Indigenous communities living in the surrounding areas were not warned, despite the experience of previous atomic tests at Emu Field, where Indigenous groups experiened a “black mist” rolling through their camps after the tests, followed by widespread sickness. The 1986 Royal Commission concluded that at Maralinga “attempts to ensure Aboriginal safety [during the tests] demonstrate ignorance, incompetence and cynicism on the part of those responsible for that safety.”

The Plant Freedom Alliance♥ The Plant Freedom Alliance is a grassroots network dedicated to right of human beings to have knowledge of and access to all the plants of this earth.

♥ The plants of this earth have been used by human kind for their medicine, cultural enjoyment, fibre and housing throughout time.

♥ Therefore the right to grow, use and trade whichever plants we choose is a fundamental human right.

♥ We focus on medicinal plants, as these are the plants that currently face the greatest restrictions in most countries, as they have the potential to threaten the profits made by pharmaceutical companies!

♥ Unfortunately, the laws passed about plants in Australia are mainly created with the profits of the huge pharmaceutical companies in mind, and not the health and wellbeing of the people.

♥ Therefore, we oppose the growing domination of the pharmaceutical industry over health care, scientific research, public education and government policy-making.

♥ We believe that the public should have the right to choose the natural plant medicines over the chemical copies (pharmaceuticals) if they wish, without breaking the law!!

Our love and respect to the Arakwal people and all the Bundjalung people who have called Byron Bay home for time immemorial. Thank you for welcoming us onto your lands. Kulchajam aknowledges and recognises the sovereignty of the first peoples of these beautiful lands, sands and seas.

Eco Kulcha Hub, Byron Bay : We have established a community eco arts and cultural hub in the heart of the arts and industrial estate in Byron Bay, providing a unique space for arts and cultural exchange, artistic collaboration and practice, the development of urban and industrial permaculture and providing access to cooperative resources including a community kitchen and workshop space, and the base for a producers and consumers cooperative.

Our development application for approval of our food processing kitchen and arts studio is currently being considered by Byron Shire Council.

Activities at the EcoKulcha Hub: Art and Cultural Exchange: The centre is intended to provide a space for artistic and cultural exchange, collaboration, knowledge and skills sharing and for the maintenance of traditional knowledges and practices. Within our own community, and reaching out to our neighbouring community, our capacity to deal with the challenges at hand is enhanced if we can learn to work together, learn from one another, share what we have and value the gifts and wisdoms of our ancestors.

Industrial permaculture: Pioneering industrial permaculture, we believe we have the highest biodiversity per m2 of garden in the Byron Arts and Industrial Estate. In one year we turned the weeds dominating our small industrial gardens into a source of food, medicine and delight with over 50 varieties of plants , including aryvedic, western, Chinese, Thai, South American medicinal plants and food sources. We harvested over 20 pumpkins, 30 papayas, hundreds of chillis, and much much more while distributing seeds, cuttings and root stock amongst our friends and members. We are establishing a network amongst other workers in the industrial estate to spread the industrial permaculture revolution to our neighbouring shops, studios and factories.

Seed sharing: the other side of seed saving is seed sharing, We provide a space for the free seed and root stock sharing amongst our members. Feel free to send or drop off your surplus seeds to 1 Acacia Street Byron Bay

Community Kitchen: supporting small producers get on their feet and preserving and value adding foods in surplus within our community, our members experiment with raw food, dried foods and herbs to produce some special products sold through the cooperative. Our development application is in to enable our members to utilise this area to value add to surplus produce from the region, and produce small scale enterprises based on healthy ethically produced food.

Workshop space: we provide a workshop space for a range of arts and cultural practices including visual arts, dance, music, yoga and movement therapy to support our members to develop their practice and share their skills with others.
